Essential Relocation Checklist For Physicians
Congratulations! You have a new job, but now you need to move to a different city/state. Relocation can be stressful, so preparation is the key. It involves many moving parts (no pun intended) happening simultaneously. Establish a timeline, then make a checklist of these 5 areas to keep in mind for a smooth move.
1. Make sure that you are certified to practice medicine in the state you are moving to. You can apply for a medical license online through the State Medical Board. The timeline for receiving your license can vary; it can take weeks in some states, or many months in others due to verification of credentials. The cost also varies from state to state. Ask your future employer if they will apply, and pay for your license.
2. Finalize details of your contract with your new employer, then notify your current employer with sufficient notice.
3. Notify your patients regarding your move (if contractually allowed). Be sure to send postcards, email or call your patients to inform them of your move to a new location. Some patients may be willing to follow you to your new employer. If this is not feasible, letting your clients know you will no longer be their provider is a basic courtesy. Be advised, however - your current contract may have a non-compete language retaining their rights to all of your patients, so review your contract before this undertaking.
4. Inform your professional liability carrier.
5. Plan on how you will transfer your duties/train to your replacement. You can discuss this with your colleagues for the best way to ensure a smooth transition.
If you've followed the above checklist, you will be well prepared on moving day to do one final sweep of your home, and move to your new location!
